What is GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation is a new law that takes effect on May 25 2018. It regulates how the personal data of EU citizens can be collected, used, and processed by businesses. While it’s being implemented by the European Union, it applies not only to organisations based in the EU but also to those that have customers and contacts in the EU. GDPR is going to have an impact on businesses all around the world.

What constitutes personal data under GDPR?

Personal data is any information relating to an identified or identifiable individual; meaning, information that could be used, on its own or in conjunction with other data, to identify an individual.

What does it mean to process data under GDPR?

Processing is “any operation or set of operations which is performed on personal data or on sets of personal data, whether or not by automated means, such as collection, recording, organization, structuring, storage, adaptation or alteration, retrieval, consultation, use, disclosure by transmission, dissemination or otherwise making available, alignment or combination, restriction, erasure or destruction.” Basically, if a business is collecting, managing, using or storing any personal data of EU citizens, they’re processing EU personal data within the meaning prescribed by the GDPR.

The new rules make sure that all organisations are set up to protect any personal data they hold, and to act appropriately if something goes wrong.

We’re updating our procedures to ensure your rights to view the information we hold about you and how to inform us when incorrect information needs to be amended. We’ll also have clear processes around consent and procedures in place should you wish your personal data to be deleted.
